Coaching Blog: The Importance of a Personal Retreat, and THE Big 2017 Commitment.

Have you scheduled your personal retreat for 2017 yet? What are you waiting on? Time? Finding a location to travel to for the retreat? Deciding what topics you will pour yourself over while you are there to move the needle on progress and performance in 2017? While these things will take a small bit of planning, I ask you to not over complicate the process, and focus more on the outcome you desire to achieve.

Planning your own personal retreat will mean so much to the way you handle this year, or, how you let it pass by with expectations and desires being unfulfilled yet again. Oh well, better luck next year right? NO! This is the year you operate differently than ever before, and my favor to ask of you (and you should be asking of yourself) is to find that cabin, hotel, etc., and take a day or two to brain dump everything you want to do this year. Here is a good recipie for success, which has worked for me in the past:

  1. Have a clear goal of where you can go and escape from all of the noise you find yourself in each day. For me, it has always been in the woods, or by the coast, where I can let my mind really expand and focus on what is important
  2. Spend the first few hours brain dumping anything that comes to mind (both strengths and weaknesses). Let your mind run wild. Jot down ideas and thoughts about what you want to accomplish this year, how you would feel if you didn’t hit the mark, what roadblocks you need to be prepared for, what strategies you are going to set in place so that seeing your commitment through until the end is unwavering, etc. Again, don’t over complicate this. Just let it flow.
  3. Take a look at everything you wrote down and narrow down the top 3-4 things in each category of life (business, finance, personal, family, etc.) that you feel would mean the most to you if you were to accomplish them. Study those for the rest of your time on the retreat. A good rule that has worked for me is a 30/70 rule. Spend 30% of your time brain dumping in step #2, and then spend 70% of your time studying the most important things you wrote down (step #3).
  4. TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONICS FOR AS MUCH TIME AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN! I cannot over stress this enough. Though a silent retreat is really hard to stick with, the harder it is should be a reflection of how much noise you invite into your life each day and are perfectly comfortable with by the way.

Lastly, make sure you set up your BIG COMMITMENT for 2017 before another day passes. I certainly didn’t dare to say GOAL, because we know how goals and resolutions work out for us. Set your commitment…your #1 nonnegotiable thing that you will not let anything get in the way of. Make this something that would really make an impact in your life. Then, THEN, set a goal on top of that commitment that you feel would stretch you beyond anything you have done before. This will help you stay more focused on making progress, vs. trying to hit an outlandish goal that has never been done before (as many do at the start of each year), only to fall short again and again, until one day, you stop setting goals or commitments altogether (and there are many, even young in age, who have already fallen into this trap). Don’t let that be you!
